Ben
Clymer, who is an outstanding defenseman, was a
high-scoring defenseman at Jefferson High School before
moving on to the University of Minnesota. He played for the
Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL in 1998-99. Originally
drafted by the Boston Bruins as the 27th
overall pick in 1997, Clymer signed as a free agent with the
Tampa Bay Lightning on the eve of the 1999-00 season.
He cracked the Lightning’s roster, but eventually was sent
down to the IHL's Detroit Vipers. Clymer's strong offensive
skills, willingness to jump into the rush, and strong outlet
passes, led to the Lightning to switch him to the wing
position. His hard work paid off -- as he was selected
to compete for Team USA in the
2000 International Hockey World Championship -- in St. Petersburg,
Russia. Clymer started the 2000-01 season with the
Vipers filling a leadership role on the team as their
Assistant Captain. In 2001-02, Clymer became a
full-time NHL’er and chipped in 14 goals for a total of 34
points, making the move to the forward ranks a complete
success. Clymer and the Lightning went on to capture their
first Stanley Cup title in 2004. Following the NHL lock out
of 2004-05, Clymer was acquired by the Washington Capitals
in the summer of 2005.
