Mathieu Dandenault, who was drafted 49th
overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit
Red Wings, has been a good friend of mine for many
years. He made his NHL debut during the
1995-96 season -- in which he played 34 games and
had 12 points. A versatile player, Dandenault
who had played all of his Junior career as a
forward, came up to the NHL with the same
expectations. However, he has since been
transformed into a solid offensive defenseman who
his capable of jumping into the rush, mainly due to
his tremendous speed! Dandenault won three
Stanley Cups with the Red Wings (1996-97, 1997-98,
and in 2001-02). In the spring of 2003, he
helped Team Canada capture the gold medal at the
World Championships before opting to sign as a free
agent with the Montreal Canadiens in the summer of
2005. I am very thankful to
Dandenault for his friendship and courtesy during
the many years that he played for the Detroit Red
Wings. He was always very willing to greet me
after games or other team functions!
