Take-Away – Sometimes referred to as the "move-away".  During a proper, on-plane take-away, the clubhead and butt-end/handle of the club work back together, with extension.  This can be done correctly by keeping the butt-end/handle of the club and your hands close to your right leg – with the hands moving straight back for about the first 2 feet or so as you start to swing the club back -- as the shaft works up, parallel, to your foot line, when it is horizontal with the ground and your target line.  At the halfway point in the backswing, the clubshaft should be parallel to the ground and target line.  When this move is done properly, the clubshaft is then considered to be "on-plane" – which should help promote (but will not guarantee) the club returning to an "on-plane" position during the downswing – which is what we are all striving for!  The actual appearance of a proper take-away (for about the first 2-3 feet or so going back) reveals that the "hands are "in" and that the clubhead is "out" – in relation to one another.

VERY BAD ADVICE -- "Take the club inside" – USUALLY IS BAD ADVICE BECAUSE PEOPLE WHO DO TAKE THE CLUB BACK TOO INSIDE TOO SOON DURING THE BACKSWING THEN DO NOT GET THE CLUBSHAFT PARALLEL TO THEIR TARGET LINE AT THE HALFWAY BACK POSITION.  CONSEQUENTLY, YOUR RIGHT ELBOW GETS TOO CLOSE TO YOUR BODY, FAR TOO SOON, WHICH CAN ALSO CAUSE FOR THE CLUB TO GET INTO SOME POORER POSITIONS ON THE DOWNSWING.

Swing Sensation/Right Arm Only --  There should be a "marriage" between your hands, arms, and body throughout the swing.  To feel more of that "marriage" concept, try this drill:  Without a club, obtain your normal address position and put your left hand's index finger on your sternum while your right arm hangs down in front of your body.  Your right arm and chest should turn back together – as one unit – in a proper looking golf swing.  In this drill, your right-hand palm should represent the clubface.  Your weight should gradually start moving towards your right side as you make your simulated backswing.  Your right-hand should be behind and above your head at this swing – to the point of feeling as though you could grab a shower curtain rod -- if one were behind you.  Feel the "coiling" effect as you turn back.  Then, as you complete your swing, allow for your completed finish to bring your right hand up and onto your back/left shoulder.  Now, with a 7-iron, try this drill.  Teeing the ball up, slightly, will be beneficial, as well.  Be aware that during the take-away, your right arm/elbow must start to fold.  Also, make sure that the clubshaft does not get too "inside" at the half-way (clubshaft parallel to the ground) back position.

THIS IS A GREAT MUSCLE MEMORY DRILL -- ESPECIALLY FOR SOMEONE WHO CANNOT GET TO THE RANGE VERY OFTEN.

Feeling the Clubhead – With a club, and using your right-hand only, swing the club back and forth in front of you, while you gradually lengthen your swing.  **  THIS IS ANOTHER GOOD DRILL FOR A PERSON WHO IS "TIGHT" OR HITS "AT" THE BALL.  THIS DRILL ALSO RELEASES ANY TENSION AS WELL  **  Lastly, with both hands correctly placed on your club, make some "figure 8’s" while holding, and extending, your club in front of you.  Maintain a light grip pressure – as if you were holding onto a brand new tube of toothpaste – with the cap off -- and not wanting to squeeze any of it out!  Concentrate on having "oily", very fluid feeling wrists.

Rhythm – Assume your address position.  Simply allow your weight to transfer towards the inside portion of your right foot/heel as you allow the club to get completely set at the top of your backswing.  In other words, DO NOT RUSH YOUR BACKSWING -- FULLY COMPLETE IT!  "You’ve got to get the bow pulled back before you can let it go".

Pre-shot Routine
1)  Make identification of your target.
2)  Repetition (a waggle or other movement).
3)  Try to get into a relaxed mode.
4)  During your pre-shot routine, try to "think" the shot (exactly the type of shot you are trying to hit) before you start your backswing.

I would recommend with all your shots, trying the following:  Stand back, behind your golf ball, about 15 feet away, looking straight down your target line.  From there, pick something out (an old divot, a leaf, etc.) right down that target line, about a grip’s length away (easy to remember, and not too far away from your ball).  At that point, then concentrate on the object that you just picked out, and begin to walk into your shot, and start addressing your golf ball.  Next, place the clubhead down behind the ball so that the bottom grooves on the clubface are perpendicular to that of your target line – to ensure that the face is square at address.  You should now align your bodylines parallel to your target line, so that you can guarantee yourself a "parallel left" position/setup.  You should now be perfectly aligned and ready to make your swing!

A good pre-shot routine is essential to play good golf!  Whatever your pre-shot routine may be, do the very best you can to make it as consistent – on each and every shot – as possible!  I promise you that you will see better scores as a result of having a better, more consistent pre-shot routine!

Left Arm Stretch -- While in your normal address posture position, and without a club, place your right-hand over your left-hand wrist, and slowly make a full simulated backswing.  Hold that position for a minimum of 10 seconds.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT DRILL FOR SOMEONE WHO IS LOSING THEIR FLEXIBILITY, AND CONSEQUENTLY LOSING THEIR ABILITY TO COMPLETE THEIR BACKSWING.  THIS DRILL IS ALSO BENEFICIAL TO SOMEONE WHO CAN NOT GET TO THE RANGE VERY OFTEN.

THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT MUSCLE MEMORY DRILL AND AN EXCELLENT STRETCHING EXERCISE.  THE AID OF A MIRROR WILL BE OF GREAT HELP.  TRY TO STRETCH -- NOT "JERK" -- INTO POSITIONS!
